Area teams swept out of volleyball playoffs
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Facing top-five opponents on the road, the three Yuma-area volleyball teams were swept out of the first round of the playoffs.
San Luis, making its first playoff appearance, fell to No. 1 Phoenix-Xavier Prep 25-9, 25-10, 25-4 in the 5A-II bracket. In the 5A-I bracket, No. 14 Yuma High fell to No. 3 Peoria-Centennial 25-14, 25-8, 25-19 and No. 12 Cibola lost to No. 5 Scottsdale-Horizon 25-7, 25-12, 25-13.
Sidewinder coach Patty Harvick was nearly at a loss for words describing the efficiency of the Gators.
"Oh my gosh. I would say they're a junior college team posing as a high school team," Harvick said. "They did not look like any high school team I've ever seen in my entire life. They're big, they hit hard, they are very accurate and the just don't make any mistakes."
Even though it was a lopsided loss, Harvick said the team was glad for the experience and was impressed with the class Xavier showed.
"They are the nicest people, they were very hospitable," Harvick said. "They bent over backward to make sure we had everything we had everything we need."
Cibola coach Vivian Klee was impressed with Horizon.
"They have girls with legs up to their necks," Klee said. "They were really tall and had a quick set they took advantage of right away. They're serving was excellent and they are just a really good team."
Katie Davidson had four kills for the Raiders, as did Myliah Ramirez.
"We had our moments," Klee said. "We passed really well, especially after we got used to their serve."
Yuma High coach Manny Garcia said the Centennial hitters were too much for the Criminal defense.
"They just had all kids of hitters," Garcia said. "They just outhit us and we couldn't keep up with them. I am pleased with our girls blocking though. We just couldn't keep up with their hitting."
