Shamrocks shut down Rams
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Yuma Catholic finished its regular season campaign with two wins. A 10-5 victory at Tonopah Valley and an 8-0 defeat of Antelope at home.
The Shamrocks (17-6, 8-3 2A West) are even with Phoenix Christian behind Bourgade as the second best team in the region.
Yuma Catholic started with two runs in the second, then broke out with four in the fifth inning. Yolanda Esparza scored twice and Zanae Facio was 2-for-2 with one run.
Still, Yuma Catholic coach Rachelle Tuffly said Yuma Catholic's success begins with Taylor Mixon dominance from the pitching mound. Mixon pitched a one hitter against the Rams, striking out four.
"Taylor did a great job of holding Antelope and giving us a chance to score," Yuma Catholic coach Rachelle Tuffly said. "We had a slow start, two in the second, and when it all came together it was good.
Tuffly continued, "She's (Mixon) peaking at the right time. Really showing some tremendous leadership. Hopefully we'll ride her wave into the regionals."
The Shamrocks have done all they can and need to wait until the rest of the region wraps up its regular season games to see where they stand in the regional tournament. YC could end up hosting a first round game or having to travel to Tucson to begin its post-season.
