Raiders lose first round
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ANTHEM - Cibola matched Boulder Creek hit-for-hit with 11, but were outscored 7-3 in a first-round 5A Division II state playoff game.
The Raiders move into the losers' bracket and play No. 14 Goldwater at home at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Cibola coach Shelly Baumann said the difference was getting clutch hits when they needed to, she said the team stranded 12 runners on base missing several scoring opportunities.
No. 11 Cibola scored one run in the first and two in the second to go up 3-1, but No. 6 Boulder Creek came right back to go up 4-3 then stretched the lead with three more in the fifth.
Cibola had a scoring opportunity in the fifth with a bases loaded, no out pop fly to outfield, but it was too shallow of a hit and Cibola was thrown out at the place. In fact the fourth inning was the only time Cibola didn't have a runner on the bases.
