Cibola softball's season ends against Pinnacle
Comments 0 | Recommend 0PHOENIX - Pinnacle ended Cibola softball's first 5A Division II state tournament run in three years with a first-pitch home run in the seventh inning to win 1-0.
Cibola coach Shelly Baumann said at this point any team can win, and it was a well played defensive effort. Sarah Ray allowed only three hits and the Raiders didn't commit an error.
Cibola managed four hits and had opportunities to score in the first and fourth, but baserunning mistakes negated those opportunities.
The Raiders best effort came in the top of the fateful inning when Alex Roman - facing two outs - got a basehit. Brittany Hudsick went in as the pinch runner and stole second, then reached third on a passed ball. Then Isabella Olea got off a clean, solid hit that lined right into the second baseman's glove, ending the inning.
Baumann said she will miss the leadership and experience of two seniors: Norma Tapia and Alyssa Olea. But there are several young players like sophomore Hudsick, who Baumann said will carry this experience into next year.
