Antelope at Yuma Catholic preview

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Kickoff: 7 p.m. today

Last week: Antelope defeated Tonopah Valley 29-13; Yuma Catholic defeated Phoenix Christian 49-0.

Records: Antelope (5-3 overall, 4-1 2A West); Yuma Catholic (7-2 overall, 5-0 2A West).

Players to watch: Antelope running back Erick Hernandez has rushed for more than 100 yards in each of the past five games ... Ed Harris leads Yuma Catholic in touchdowns scored with 21 and has picked up more than 1,100 yards rushing this season.

Antelope coach John Blabe's comments: "(Yuma) Catholic is vastly improved from the team that played Kofa and Antelope the first two weeks. As a team they have improved each week ... That first week (against YC), we put everybody in to see who could play and who couldn’t play."

Yuma Catholic coach Rhett Stallworth's comments: "We figured that (Antelope) would be in the playoffs, I didn’t know that it’d be do-or-die at this point for them. I figured they would have already been in and they probably should be when you look at some of the other teams that might squeak in."

The lowdown: The Rams are playing for a shot at the playoffs while the Shamrocks have already clinched a spot. Stallworth said that he expects Antelope to throw out a lot of different looks for this game, but won't try and overprepare. "One gadget play here is OK, but if you try and change your system you may be hurting yourself more than helping," Stallworth said. It's no surprise who the Rams will be relying on as Erick Hernandez has been Blabe's go-to guy. Hernandez has 10 touchdowns on the season and leads a team that was ravaged by injuries. The same is the case for Yuma Catholic, which will put the game in the hands of senior running back Ed Harris and junior quarterback Julian Higuera. Higuera will be starting his fourth game at QB for the Shamrocks. Harris said that the change at QB hasn't made meant changes for the offense. "(Julian) is just getting more reps because he is our main quarterback," Harris said. "There haven’t been many changes because we have been prepared for it."
