YC girls cross country wins region title

Yuma Catholic girls stay the course and were crowned 2A Metro-West Region cross country champions on Friday.

The Shamrocks finished with 49 points and placed three runners in the top 10 - Devon Graham was fourth in 22 minutes, 17 seconds followed by freshman Jackie Hill in fifth (22:20) and Sarah Wentling in sixth (22:24).

Rounding out the scoring for YC was Rachel Harmon (12, 23:32) and Kristina Carroll (22, 25:57).

Samantha Barczynski was 44th (26:57) and Beth Norton was 45th (27:05) for YC.

The Shamrocks qualified for the 2A state meet Nov. 8 at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix. The top six teams and top 20 individuals from the regional moved on.

Barczynski, who was in the top 10 at the time, was one of six runners to take a wrong turn midway through the 2.9 miles course at Thunderbird Park.

Three runners from Valley Christian, one of the top teams coming into the meet, were disqualified, leaving the Trojans out of the team competition.

YC's boys were 10th out of 14 teams. Alyosha Sandigo was 22nd and Joe Schaff was 29th.
