Raider boys, girls teams qualify for state

Cibola's Bernie Montoya took first place at the Division I cross country sectionals meet at Grand Canal Park in Goodyear on Friday.

Montoya led the Raider boys team to a fourth-place finish that qualified the team for the state meet. Other medalists for Cibola were Richard Clayton (7th) and Ryan Norton (14th). Rounding out the Cibola boys' team were Alonso Perez (22nd) and Jose Garcia (35th).

Montoya, who finished with a time of 15:23, beat the current state champ in preparation for Saturday's state meet in Phoenix.

On the girls side, Cibola's Monica Huston took first with a time of 19:01. The Raiders finished fourth out of 18 teams to qualify for state. Amanda Martinez was Cibola's other medalist after finishing 14th.

Chelsea Madsen (30th), Melissa Mendoza (31st) and Valerie Molina (33rd) rounded out the top five for Cibola.

The Kofa Kings girls team also qualified for state as they scored 204 points, good for sixth.

Lesly Salazar's 21st-place finish in 20:49 paced Kofa. Salazar was followed by Ruth Hanson, Paige Perry, Brianna Ross and Limayri Roman.

YC misses out on qualifying for state

At the Division IV, Section I meet at Freestone Park in Gilbert, Yuma Catholic's season ended on a down note as the boys placed 11th out of 13 teams. The top seven teams qualified for the state meet.

The Shamrocks didn't field a girls team, but their lone girls runner, Patricia Scholle, came in 27th.

Coach Ralph Farr said it is the first time in his 30-year coaching career he has not had a team or individual qualify for the state meet.
