Kofa's Ledgerwood second at state
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Kofa's Stephanie Ledgerwood finished her prep cross country career as the 5A Division II state runner-up.
She also finished second at the state meet last year.
Ledgerwood completed the course at Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix in 19 minutes, 53 seconds, 26 seconds behind state champ Lacey Kalinen, a freshman from Scottsdale-Pinnacle.
Yuma High had the top runner in Yuma County at the state meet as Yuma's Gabe Torregrosa (17:23.00) edged Kofa's Ricardo Valdez (17:23.44) in a photo finish for 10th place in the boys race
Meanwhile, the Kofa girls placed 11th in the state as a team with 315 points to avenge their loss to Cibola in the region championship meet. Cibola placed 15th with 422 points.
"They did an outstanding job," Kofa coach Charlie Splawn said. "Those kids came back and really worked their butt off to put themselves back at the top."
The Cibola boys took eighth place as a team., and had two runners medal. Ryan Norton finished in 17:49.55 to take 23rd, while Alan Fernandez got the last medal with a 27th place finish at 17:52.35.
"We're pleased," Cibola coach Kris Norton said. "We were hoping sixth through eighth, and we knew we were going to have to run pretty decent to do that well.
"It just wasn't there for Ryan today. I think the 10-day illness he had came back and got him."
The Yuma boys placed 13th. Torregrosa led the way, while Santos Castro took 38th at 18:13.4 and Cesar Villegas placed 50th at 18:25.05.
"We didn't do too bad," Yuma coach Tim Schwehr said. "My top three did awesome."
On the girls side, in addition to Ledgerwood, the Kings got a 41st place from Amaris Pauly (22:26.05), and Laura Eldrige placed 46th at 22:45.85
Gila Ridge's Alyssa Segura placed 57th at 23:08.15, and Cibola's Lety and Zuzy Gonzalez took 68th and 69th respectively. The Hawks' Josh Segura placed 72nd in the boys race.
