Sidewinder tennis duo advances to fourth round

San Luis' Eric Rodriguez and Max Pinnow advanced to the fourth round of the 5A-II State Tournament for boys doubles, beating a team from Avondale-Westview 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday at the Paseo Racquet Center.
 
The duo posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in the first round Friday and followed it up with a 6-2, 6-1 win Saturday. Their next opponent is the No. 2 seed from Tucson-Ironwood Ridge this Friday at 5 p.m.
 
The same team that will play Rodriguez and Pinnow ousted the Sidewinders' other doubles team in the third round Saturday. Rafael Rodriguez and Jorge Villicana won 6-2, 6-4 in the first and 6-0, 6-1 in the second but lost to Ironwood Ridge 6-1, 6-1.
 
Yuma's boys doubles team of Tyler Franklin and Jordan White lost to the top-seeded team from Ironwood Ridge 2-6, 2-6 in the third round. To reach the third round, Franklin and White defeated Phoenix-Camelback 6-0, 6-2 in round one and Avondale-Westview 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 earlier Saturday.
 
Yuma's Mitchell Harmon defeated Westview's Jesse Johnson  6-3, 6-2 Friday, but lost in the second round against top-seeded Nicholas Montoya of Horizon 1-6, 0-6 Saturday. Criminal singles player Aaron Neidiffer lost in the first round 6-3, 6-2.
 
San Luis singles Juan Lara lost in the first round (6-4, 6-1) along with Adrian Maranon (7-5, 7-5).
 
Cibola's Albert Castro won in the first round 6-3, 6-1 Friday got into the third round Saturday with a 6-1, 6-0 win before losing to Ricardo Lopez of Tucson-Ironwood 6-3, 7-5.
Kofa's Greg Hazen lost 6-1, 6-1 in the first round
 
Gila Ridge's Charlie Fiddler also reached the third round with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win but lost to Ironwood Ridge's Andrew Vo 6-0, 6-0. The Hawks' Dylan Freeman lost to Cibola's Luis Franco 6-2, 6-0 in the second round, but Franco lost in the third round to Horizon's Sam Shi, 6-0, 6-0.
 
In other boys doubles, Cibola's Rodriguez and Coby Teal beat Kofa's Ryan Thornburg and Alex Hazen 6-3, 6-3 Friday, then lost in the second round Saturday 6-4, 7-5. Raider doubles players Kyle Duran and Blake Boyer did the same thing, winning Friday 6-1, 6-2 but losing 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Gila Ridge's Jovan Figueroa and Brandon Murrietta lost 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, as did Yuma's Kitaro Jashimoto and Franklin Sahloff 6-1, 6-1 Kofa's other team of J.D. Ebadirad and Dean Vedder lost 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.
 
For the girls, Kofa's Megan McKenna reached the third round in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 first round win on Friday and a 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 win on Saturday, but lost to Phoenix-Pinnacle's Kaila Knopf 6-2, 6-0. Knopf also defeated Yuma's Alma Solis 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.
 
San Luis' Aidee Perez won her first-round singles match 6-1, 6-3 before bowing out in the second round 6-0, 6-1 to Tucson-Ironwood Ridge's Shannon Contreras, the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Her teammate, Ariana Huerta, lost 6-0, 6-0 to the No. 2 seed in the second round after her 6-4, 6-0 first-round victory. Cibola's Samantha Chambless suffered a similar fate to the No. 4 seed of the tournament, winning her opening-round match 6-0, 6-0 before losing by the same score in round two.
 
Cibola's Haley Harrison lost in the first round (6-1, 6-1), as did Kofa's Stacy Harris (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), Yuma's Abby Yepiz (6-0, 6-1).
 
In doubles, San Luis' doubles team of Krystal Rodriguez and Joanna Cardenas lost in the first round (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Auri Diaz and Cristina Piceno lost 6-2, 5-7, 7-6. The Gila Ridge girls team of Hannah Lanning and Meghan Johnson beat one of Yuma's doubles teams in the first round 6-1, 6-2, then moved to the third round with a default win before losing to a team from Deer Valley, 6-1, 6-0. Their teammates, Audrey Patton and Tiffany Laughlin advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 7-5 win but lost the next match 6-3, 6-4.
 
Both of Cibola's doubles team exited in the first round (6-1, 6-1) and (6-1, 6-2). Kofa's doubles team won its first round match (6-4, 6-4) but lost in round two (6-1, 6-3). Yuma's second doubles team lost 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.
