The Division IV Section I tournament may be out of reach for Yuma Catholic, but the state tournament isn't.
The Shamrocks lost 53-43 in double overtime to Tonopah on Wednesday, having four players foul out and needing to play three freshmen in crunch time.
YC (9-9) entered the night ninth in the section and 21st overall in power points. The top eight in each of the three sections make the sectional tournament, then the top four teams from the tournament go to state. The other 12 teams are the top 12 in overall power points, and the Shamrocks are alive to be in that group.
“It's kind of like conference tournament week before the NCAA tournament,” YC coach Bob McGalliard said. “You have to hope for no upsets or else it's going to mess up automatic and at-large bids.”
Madison Brazeel had 22 points for the Shamrocks.
San Pasqual's slow start costly
San Pasqual couldn't get going early, and it cost them in a 40-22 loss at Phoenix Christian on Wednesday.
Gina Rivera had nine points and 12 rebounds for the Warriors, while Tatiana Damon had eight points and 15 rebounds.

Shamrocks lose close
to Tonopah
Yuma Catholic was plagued with a tough shooting night in their regular season finale on Wednesday night.
The Shamrocks fell 54-50 at home to Tonopah Valley. Freshmen Matt Pistone and Carter Rodriguez each scored 14 points for Yuma Catholic.
After leading 29-20 at halftime, the Shamrocks (11-7) couldn't overcome a night they shot 4 for 19 from 3-pointers and 11 for 21 from the line.
“When we miss our shots, it's tough for us,” Shamrocks coach Brooks Neumann said.

Kofa loses at Highland
The No. 14 Kofa girls soccer team lost its playoff game Wednesday 6-0 to No. 3 Highland.
“It was a good game, they were just a better team,” assistant coach Jessica Zimmerman said. “We have a really young team, so it was a little overwhelming.” Coach Marisela Velasquez was not available for comment.
