Cibola, Gila Ridge drop into elimination bracket
Cibola falls to Red Mountain
After three innings of playing No. 2 Red Mountain to a standstill, No. 7 Cibola surrendered five runs in both the fourth and the fifth innings and lost 10-0 in five in the third round of the Division I state tournament.
“We were in the game. You have to give credit to them, though. They were a very good hitting team. We held them down in the first few innings but then they got momentum and we gave them a few extra outs,” Cibola coach Shelly Baumann said.
Hannah Lackey went 2 for 2 with a double, Grecia Villa went 2 for 2 and Melissa Padilla went 1-2 in the losing effort.
The Raiders will play No. 3 Xavier at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose Mofford Complex.
Gila Ridge falls to Sunrise Mountain
For half a game, it looked like the Gila Ridge softball team was ready to pull off their biggest postseason upset yet.
However, top-ranked Sunrise Mountain broke open a tied game and defeated No. 24 Gila Ridge 9-1 in the third round of the Division II state tournament.
In the top of the fourth, Gila Ridge shortstop Summer Ehrig hit a solo home run to center field to tie the game 1-1.
“The kids have a ton of fight in them,” Gila Ridge coach Jaime McGalliard. “We know what the state playoffs are about. They were pretty confident.”
However, Sunrise Mountain scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to cushion their lead. The Hawks will face No. 4 Prescott in an elimination at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose Mofford Complex.
