Catron shoots 70, one off lead
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Gila Ridge boys golfer Collin Catron is tied for second place after the first round of the 5A-II State Meet at the 500 Club after shooting a first-round score of 2-under 70.
Scottsdale-Horizon's Blake Cannon took the 18-hole lead with a 69.
Catron shot a 30 on the front nine, including five straight birdies.
"Everybody caught wind of what was going on," Gila Ridge coach David Schultz said.
But Catron finished the back nine with a 40 to fall out of the top spot.
"Sometimes you get some breaks and sometimes you don't," Schultz said. "He was pretty aggressive out there, but then again you can't shoot 30 without being aggressive."
Catron was the only Hawk to qualify for state. The final round of the tournament is today.
